What is the citadel?
The word "citadel" is borrowed from Italianlanguage and means "small town". What is the citadel was well known to the ancient warriors who defended the cities from the attack. Definitions of the word are based on the concept of "stronghold, support."
Citadel as a fortifying structure
The citadel was called the stronghold usedgarrison to protect the city. It could have been a fortress as a whole, or its separate part, which had independent defense. In the event of the collapse of the main defense facilities, the citadel was the last refuge for the soldiers.
The first citadels can be considered defensethe strengthening of the Indian civilization. In Russia, such fortifications were called children's, and later - the Kremlin. In its territory were also located barracks to accommodate the garrison and administrative buildings.
A vivid example of such a fortification structure of the Renaissance, which has survived to this day, is the Spandau Citadel in Berlin.
Some ships of the sea are equipped with a stronghold forprotection against pirates. Despite the fact that such a construction is not cheap, there are cases when the ship's citadel saved the team from death. The citadel is equipped in the place from where control is possible, and must meet a number of requirements:
- be as tight as possible to exclude the possibility of "smoking" the team;
- have independent communication systems, for example, satellite, which will be useful in case of destruction by pirates of the basic communication and navigation systems;
- Have a supply of food and medicine at the rate for the whole crew of the ship for a minimum of 3-5 days;
- is equipped with hidden CCTV systems to be able to track the enemy's actions.
